Investing in Your Staff’s Training to Reduce Turnover

It’s true of any company in any business sector that it’s more prudent to invest in the training and development of the staff that you already have, than to allow a high staff turnover threshold and to rely too heavily on the talent pool outside of your company to mitigate this. The care sector is no exception. A strong commitment to your existing staff’s educational growth not only enhances your organisation’s reputation, but helps to foster the development of skilled, knowledgeable and capable leaders throughout the organisation – all of which contributes to a better overall standard of care.

The Data Behind Training and Retention in the Care Sector

According to a report conducted by Skills for Care, organisations throughout the sector are increasingly acknowledging the importance of ongoing staff training in improving retention rates. Put simply, care staff who are provided high calibre learning and development opportunities are more likely to stay with their current employers than to consider employment opportunities elsewhere, reflected by average turnover rates that decreased from 37% among staff who had no qualifications to 26.5% among those that had a qualification (source: Skills for Care).
