The Care Certificate

The Care Certificate, developed by Skills for Care, equips care workers with the fundamental
skills, knowledge and behaviours required to provide compassionate and high-quality care and
support. This foundational programme ensures that all new healthcare and adult social care
workers receive the necessary training, supervision and assessment before they start their roles
independently.

As the UK’s only video-based training provider endorsed by Skills for Care, CareTutor proudly
offers a multimedia approach to achieving the Care Certificate. This ensures that your staff are
prepared to provide the best possible care right from the start.

The Care Certificate - what you need to know

  • The Care Certificate is an identified set of standards that all health and social care workers must adhere to in their daily professional roles. It is specifically designed for the non-regulated workforce to ensure that all caregivers begin their roles with a consistent foundation of knowledge and skills.
  • Regulated staff, such as doctors, nurses, social workers and occupational therapists, gain similar skills and knowledge through their professional training and therefore are not required to obtain the certificate.
  • The Care Certificate assures both employers and recipients of care that every health or social care worker has completed rigorous, standardised training. This provides confidence that the standard of care across the sector within the UK is regulated to the same level of high quality.

The Care Certificate Standards

The Care Certificate comprises 15 essential standards, developed by Skills for Care, Health Education England and Skills for Health. These standards form a comprehensive induction for those new to the care sector.

The standards address key components of health and social care, focusing on safe and effective practices. The integration of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and workplace assessments ensures that care workers are thoroughly prepared for their duties.

Completion of all 15 standards is mandatory, as it verifies that a care worker is fully competent in their ability to provide high-quality care.

The 15 standards are:

No, the Care Certificate is not equivalent to an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification). The Care Certificate is an entry-level programme that provides new health and social care staff with the foundational skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for their roles. It is designed to ensure they can work safely and effectively. On the other hand, NVQs are more in-depth vocational qualifications available at various levels, reflecting increasing complexity and responsibility. They involve a rigorous assessment process and are often pursued for formal qualification and career advancement in specific fields. While both are valuable for career development in health and social care, they serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

We will not be beaten on quality or price!
