Stress Awareness Week : Caring for the Care Professionals

Stress Awareness Week

Every year, during International Stress Awareness Week (3-7 November 2025) organised by ISMA UK, workplaces around the world are invited to pause, reflect and act on how stress and mental wellbeing are handled. (isma.org.uk)

This year’s theme is “Optimising Employee Well-being through Strategic Stress Management.” (isma.org.uk)

Whether you work as a care assistant, nurse, manager or support staff, the nature of your role places unique demands on your wellbeing and not just on the people you care for.

Why Stress Awareness Matters in Health & Social Care

Working in health and social care means you are constantly in the front line of human experience: supporting people through illness, loss, recovery or day to day challenges. That brings both reward and risk.

Some of the pressures common in this sector include:

  • high emotional load from caring for vulnerable individuals
  • shifting responsibilities, staff shortages or unexpected events
  • long hours or shift work making it harder to rest and recover
  • the need to maintain both professional boundaries and personal empathy

When stress becomes chronic rather than short term, it doesn’t just affect individuals, it can affect team morale, care quality and staff retention. ISMA UK reminds us that stress is not in itself a mental health problem, but if left unmanaged, it can cause or worsen mental health issues. (Business Wales)

In care settings, recognising stress early both in ourselves and our colleagues helps ensure better outcomes for everyone.

What the 2025 Week is Focusing On

According to ISMA UK, themes for this year include:

  • Creating workplace cultures that prioritise growth, support, recognition and psychological safety. (org.uk)
  • Leadership and management having a pivotal role in setting the tone for stress-aware workplaces. (Business Wales)
  • Encouraging organisations to move beyond ad hoc wellbeing initiatives and embed strategic stress management as part of their core activity. (org.uk)

For care providers and social care organisations, these prompts are highly relevant: a supportive culture, clear communication, and proactive stress management are not optional, they are essential.

Steps You Can Take This Stress Awareness Week

Here are some practical ways to mark the week in your setting:

  • Host a check-in with your team: dedicate 10-15 minutes to ask how everyone is coping not as a formality, but as a genuine conversation.
  • Reflect on triggers: Encourage staff to reflect (individually or in pairs) on what in their day-to-day role causes stress, and what support they would value.
  • Promote breaks and recovery: In care settings this can be tricky but even a brief pause, a short walk or a moment of mindful breathing can help reset.
  • Embed training: Use the week as a catalyst to roll out (or refresh) your Mental Health Awareness training via CareTutor, reinforcing the message that wellbeing matters.
  • Promote openness: Normalise conversations around stress and mental health remind your team that seeking support is a strength, not a weakness. Use #stressawarenessweek to join conversations around this subject on social media.
