Why Involving People with Dementia in Daily Activities Matters

Dementia

Introduction
People living with dementia may find some everyday tasks more difficult, but that doesn’t mean they should be excluded from daily life. Alzheimer’s Society emphasises that staying involved in meaningful activities helps maintain independence, dignity and quality of life. It also gives staff and families more opportunities for connection.

Why involvement is important

  • Maintains skills and confidence. Supporting someone to take part in tasks they can still manage (with the right level of help) preserves ability and self-esteem.
  • Promotes wellbeing. Everyday activities, cooking, gardening, setting the table, folding laundry, can reduce anxiety, improve mood and provide purpose.
  • Encourages independence. Even small contributions give people a sense of control over their lives.
  • Strengthens relationships. Sharing activities creates moments of companionship between staff, families and the person with dementia.
  • Reduces isolation. Staying active in the household or care setting helps people feel included and valued.

Practical ways to involve people

  • Adapt tasks. Break activities into smaller steps, simplify instructions, and provide visual prompts or demonstrations.
  • Offer choice. Ask whether they’d like to join in and respect their decision.
  • Focus on strengths. Encourage what they can do, not what they can’t.
  • Create routine. Consistent times for meals, walks, or household chores help people feel secure and engaged.
  • Use familiar activities. Link tasks to the person’s past interests and experiences, such as music, gardening, or crafts.
