World Alzheimer’s Month 2025: Ask About Dementia, Make a Difference

World Alzheimer's Month 2025: Ask About Dementia, Make a Difference | CareTutor | Social Care eLearning

Every September, the world unites for World Alzheimer’s Month, a global campaign led by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Now in its 14th year, this initiative, culminating on World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, brings together individuals, organisations, and Alzheimer’s associations worldwide to challenge stigma, improve understanding, and support the over 55 million people living with dementia and their carers. In 2025, the campaign theme, “Ask About Dementia, Ask About Alzheimer’s”, encourages open dialogue to normalise asking questions, reduce stigma, and increase knowledge about dementia.

The 2025 Theme: Ask About Dementia, Ask About Alzheimer’s

This year’s theme, “Ask About Dementia, Ask About Alzheimer’s”, emphasises the importance of breaking the silence around dementia. Despite affecting over 55 million people globally, misconceptions persist, 80% of the public and 65% of healthcare professionals wrongly believe dementia is a normal part of aging. The campaign, using hashtags #AskAboutDementia, #AskAboutAlzheimers, and #WorldAlzMonth, seeks to change perceptions by encouraging people to ask questions, seek information, and engage in conversations about dementia. By normalising these discussions, we can improve diagnosis rates, enhance support systems, and empower those living with dementia and their carers.

The 2025 World Alzheimer Report, released on September 18, will focus on rehabilitation, highlighting ways to maximise independence and quality of life for people with dementia through social support, inclusive design, and rehabilitation programs. This aligns with the campaign’s goal of developing informed, compassionate communities.

Why World Alzheimer’s Month Matters

Dementia is a growing global challenge, with someone developing the condition every 3 seconds. By 2030, the number of people living with dementia is projected to reach 78 million, and by 2050, 139 million. The economic burden is staggering, costing $1.3 trillion annually, a figure expected to double by 2030. Alarmingly, 88% of people with dementia report experiencing discrimination, and 46% cite fear and stigma as barriers to diagnosis. World Alzheimer’s Month addresses these challenges by promoting awareness, advocating for better care, and supporting initiatives like the WHO Global Action Plan on Dementia (2017-2031), which calls for national dementia plans and increased awareness.

How to Get Involved in World Alzheimer’s Month 2025

There are countless ways to participate in World Alzheimer’s Month, and no action is too small. Here are impactful ways to get involved:

  1. Raise Awareness on Social Media
Share posts using #AskAboutDementia, #AskAboutAlzheimers, and #WorldAlzMonth to spread key messages. ADI provides free social media cards, posters, and infographics in English, Spanish, and French, available via their campaign toolkit. Create your own content with personal stories, videos, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of events like Memory Walks to engage your audience. Use high-quality visuals and captions to maximise impact, and tag relevant organisations to boost visibility.

  2. Organise or Attend Events
Participate in or host Memory Walks, fundraising events, or awareness campaigns organised by local Alzheimer’s associations. These events highlight the needs of those affected by dementia in your community. ADI’s resources offer tips on planning events or advocating for landmarks to be lit up in purple for World Alzheimer’s Day.

  3. Educate Yourself and Others
Deepen your understanding of dementia through educational resources or training. CareTutor offers two comprehensive courses to equip caregivers and individuals with practical knowledge:
    • Dementia Care 1: Understanding Dementia (33 minutes, CPD-accredited) explores the physical condition of dementia, myths, stereotypes, and person-centered care principles, including the VIPS framework.
    • Dementia Care 2: Person-Centred Dementia Care (40 minutes, CPD-accredited) focuses on person-centered skills, effective communication, and promoting positive care practices.
Both courses, led by Jacqui Arnold, a care expert with over 35 years of experience, align with standards like the Care Certificate and RQF qualifications.

  4. Advocate for Change
Support the push for National Dementia Plans, with only about 50 countries currently implementing them. Engage with policymakers or share ADI’s advocacy resources to amplify your voice. These plans are critical for improving diagnosis, treatment, and care.

  5. Donate or Fundraise
Support ADI’s work by donating or organising fundraisers. Every contribution helps fund awareness campaigns, research, and support services. Visit ADI’s fundraising guide for ideas.

  6. Display Campaign Materials
Use ADI’s posters on dementia risk factors and warning signs in strategic locations like healthcare settings, community centers, or public transport hubs. Ensure high-quality printing and proper placement permissions for maximum impact.

  • Impact on Carers: 50% of dementia care costs come from informal care, with women making up two-thirds of caregivers.
  • Prevention: Up to 45% of dementia cases could be delayed or prevented by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors.
  • Stigma: 35% of carers have hidden a dementia diagnosis due to stigma, and 85% of people with dementia lack post-diagnostic support.

Make a Difference This September

World Alzheimer’s Month is a call to action to create a more dementia-friendly world. By asking questions, sharing knowledge, and making sure care staff are trained in Dementia Care (Dementia Care 1 and Dementia Care 2), you can help improve the lives of those affected. Together, we can reduce stigma, improve care, and empower communities.
