FAQs

Q1. Do we have to have used LDSS before to claim for these courses?

No. You can claim even if you have never used LDSS before, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. You need to be an adult social care employer in England, have an up-to-date ASC-WDS account, and complete the NHSBSA LDSS onboarding so you can use the Digital Claims Service.

Q2. Can bank or agency staff attend and still be funded?

Yes, as long as they are working in non-regulated adult social care roles for an eligible employer in England, and you are the organisation paying for the training. LDSS funding is for the non-regulated workforce, including deputy and registered managers, team leaders, care workers and agency staff who are directly employed by or placed with your service.

Q3. What happens if a learner misses one of the modules?

Skills for Care expect learners to attend all modules in order to receive a certificate. If someone cannot attend a session, we will work with you to move them to an alternative date where possible. For LCIC, because of the project work and group activities, missing a module may mean restarting in a future cohort, so it is important to choose dates that learners can realistically commit to.

Q4. Can we mix different roles and services within the same cohort?

Yes. It is very common to have a mix of registered managers, deputies and senior staff from different homes or services in the same virtual group. The key is that everyone is working in adult social care and has a leadership element to their role. Many providers use this to build networks and share ideas across services.

Q5. How does payment work if the training is “fully funded”?

LDSS works on a reimbursement model. You book places with us and pay the course fee upfront, then once the training is completed, you submit a claim through the NHSBSA Digital Claims Service. If your claim meets the guidance, you can be reimbursed up to the current maximum – £525 per learner for the main leadership programmes and £135 per learner for the CPD days – subject to the overall caps and funds still being available.

Q6. Can we still claim LDSS funding if we already receive other funding?

You can use LDSS alongside other schemes, but you must not claim twice for the same cost. For example, if a qualification or course has already been fully funded through another government scheme, you would not be able to claim LDSS reimbursement for that same spend. If you are unsure, NHSBSA can advise whether a specific claim is in scope.

Q7. How quickly are LDSS claims usually processed?

Timescales can vary, but once you are set up on the system and submit a complete claim with the right evidence, NHSBSA aim to process claims within their published service standards. The most common delays happen when evidence is incomplete, or ASC-WDS data is not fully up to date, so we provide clear invoices, certificates and guidance to help you get it right the first time.

Q8. Where can we find the official LDSS and eligibility guidance?

You can find the main guidance on the government website under “Learning and Development Support Scheme for the adult social care workforce”, and the current list of eligible courses and reimbursement amounts on the linked “Eligible training courses and qualifications” page. The NHSBSA site also explains the Digital Claims Service and onboarding process. If you would like direct links, we are happy to send these over. All links can be found on the Caretutor.org website.

Q9. What are the typical timings for the leadership and CPD courses?

Our Skills for Care leadership programmes (Lead to Succeed, Well-Led and LCIC) are delivered virtually in half-day blocks, usually running for around 3.5 hours per module (for example, 9:30 am–1:00 pm with a short break). Dates are scheduled in advance so managers can plan rotas around them. The one-day CPD courses run as a single session (typically 9:30 am–1:30 pm with breaks on a Friday). We’ll share confirmed dates and times for each cohort via our website.

Q10. Does this cover Wales?

The funding is only available for care staff in England but the courses can still be purchased and attended and will be useful for staff leadership development in other countries in the UK.

Q11. How long does each course run for?

The Leadership programmes will run for 4 or 5 weekly morning sessions, the three CPD modules will rotate and run every Friday morning. The first cohorts will start in January 2026.
