Learning Disability Week is almost here!
What is a learning disability?
A learning disability is a disorder that affects an individual’s ability to acquire, understand, and use new information, impacting skills like reading, writing, math, listening, and speaking. Examples include dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and processing disorders. Despite having normal intelligence, individuals face specific learning challenges.
Every year, the third week of June is recognised as the Learning Disability Week. Learning Disability Week is an annual event to raise awareness and advocate for individuals with learning disabilities. It promotes understanding, reduces stigma, and celebrates the achievements of those with learning disabilities through various activities and campaigns.
The theme for this yearโs Learning Disability Week is “Do you see me?” which is all about being seen, heard and valued. This yearโs theme emphasises the importance of recognising, hearing, and valuing individuals with learning disabilities. It calls for greater awareness and understanding, asking society to look beyond the disability and see the person, their strengths, and their contributions. Spread the word as much as possible throughout the week.
The topics to talk about each day during Learning Disability Week are:
- Monday 17 June: “Do you see me?”
- Tuesday 18 June: “Do you understand me?”
- Wednesday 19 June: “Will you work with me?”
- Thursday 20 June: “Do you hear me?”
- Friday 21 June: “Do you include me?”
- Saturday 22 June: “Will you support me?”
- Sunday 23 June: A summary of the week.
There are multiple ways with which you can get involved in the Learning Disability Week. Download social media resources from Mencap’s website to help spread awareness during Learning Disability Week. Use #learningdisabilityweek and #doyouseeme when you post on social media to join the efforts on spreading awareness.
You can highlight the achievements of individuals with learning disabilities and showcase their capabilities. Join Mencap’s campaign to challenge and overcome the barriers faced by people with learning disabilities. You can also organise fundraising events which can range from a bake sale to a challenging adventure. Got an idea for fundraising? Register on the website to get support with your fundraising.
With the Learning Disabilities Week taking place next week, we would like to spotlight our Supporting people with Learning Disability course. This course will help care workers to support people with Learning Disabilities and will help them understand that offering activities, skills and initiatives to those with learning disabilities is incredibly important.
