World Suicide Prevention Day: Changing the Narrative to Save Lives

World Suicide Prevention Month 2024

Suicide is a significant global public health challenge, claiming the lives of over 720,000 people each year. Each death leaves a devastating impact on families, friends, and communities, yet the issue of suicide remains cloaked in silence and stigma. World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), observed on September 10, brings the world together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and spread the message that suicides are preventable.

This yearโ€™s theme for WSPD is โ€œChanging the Narrative on Suicideโ€, with a call to action: โ€œStart the Conversationโ€. This theme is about transforming the way we talk about suicide, creating a more open and supportive environment, and creating an understanding around a deeply complex issue.

Did you know the Global Impact of Suicide?

  • Suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15โ€“29 year olds.
  • 73% of suicides occur in low and middle-income countries, where access to mental health care may be limited.
  • Each suicide represents the end of a personal struggle, influenced by a range of factors including social, psychological, and environmental pressures.

Why do we need to change the narrative on Suicide?

Changing the narrative on suicide means altering how we understand and address it. Suicide has historically been surrounded by shame, blame, and fear, leaving those at risk feeling isolated and afraid to seek help. This stigma not only prevents honest conversations but also limits access to the support and care that could save lives.

By using the โ€œStart the Conversationโ€ message, we challenge the silence that surrounds suicide. Every conversation, whether with a friend, family member, or within the community, can make a difference. Speaking openly about mental health and suicide helps reduce the stigma, creates understanding, and encourages those in need to seek help before itโ€™s too late.

Suicide Prevention Requires Broader Action

While individual conversations are vital, changing the narrative on suicide also demands action. Governments, health organisations, and policymakers must prioritise mental health and suicide prevention as key issues. World Suicide Prevention Day calls for:

  • Increased access to mental health services, particularly in countries with higher suicide rates and fewer resources.
  • Policies that integrate mental health into broader health care systems, ensuring that everyone has access to care when they need it.
  • Education and early intervention programs that help identify and address risk factors like prior suicide attempts, mental illness, and social isolation.

With coordinated efforts and the right policies, we can prevent suicides and offer support to those who may be struggling in silence.

How can you make a difference?

World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in changing the narrative around suicide. Use the hashtag #WorldSuicidePreventionDay and share the message: suicide is preventable. Download free resources by the Samaritans and start posting on social media to spread the word.

By starting the conversation, we create environments where people feel safe discussing their struggles. Together, we can build a society where mental health is prioritised, and every individual feels valued and supported.

In the care sector, providing access to mental health care and regular emotional check-ins can help reduce the risk and improve well-being. Our video-based eLearning course โ€œMental Health Awarenessโ€ , enhances mental health understanding, identification, and the provision of appropriate support for people experiencing mental health issues.
