Safeguarding Children in Social Care Settings

All health care staff who come into contact with children and people have a legal responsibility to safeguard and promote their welfare and should know what to do if they have concerns about safeguarding issues, including child protection. The Care Certificate's Safeguarding Children Standard is aimed at those working in adult health and social care who may in the course of their role come into contact with children.


Subjects covered include: 

  • This video sets out how to recognise potential indicators of child maltreatment including physical, emotional and sexual abuse as well as neglect
  • Understand the potential impact of a parent or carers physical or mental health on the wellbeing and development of a child or young person
  • Knowledge of relevant information (children’s act 1989 & 2004, sexual offences act 2003)
  • Take appropriate action if they have concerns including appropriately reporting concerns and seeking advice
  • Know the importance of sharing information
  • Know the risks of associated with internet and online social networking
  • Know what the term ‘looked after child’ means
